Genital Herpes
People who catch the herpes simplex virus (HSV) often end with genital herpes. Ulcers in (or around) the anus and genital area usually appear when the person first catches the virus and are often painful. Feelings of being unwell, pain when passing urine and a sharp or tingling feeling in the anus or genital area may also be experienced. Some people have no symptoms. Some may have sores but these are not painful.
Some people will get herpes again and again but often the first time is the worst with the others being less severe.
Symptoms can be helped by ice or cold water on the area. Baths with salt may also help. Topical anaesthetics, e.g. lidocaine gel, and petroleum jelly, e.g. Vaseline, can be used to help reduce the symptoms. Antiviral drugs (e.g. acyclovir) help by reducing the effects of the herpes and help recover from the virus quicker.
