Gonorrhoea
Gonorrhoea is an infection that affects many areas of the body - the urethra, cervix, rectum, mouth and throat.
Many women who have gonorrhoea do not know they have this infection as there are no symptoms. Some women may however have an unusual vaginal discharge and may have pain when passing urine. Bleeding between periods with lower abdominal pain may be experienced with heavier periods. If the infection is not treated, it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease
Men may have a white, yellow or green discharge from the urethra (the tube inside the penis which passes urine). They may feel pain when passing urine. Some men will have no symptoms. If the infection is in the rectum, men may feel itchiness, pain or discomfort. They may have a discharge from the anus. The eyes and throat may also be infected. If the infection is ignored, men may feel pain when the penis is erected and have infections in the testicles and prostate gland.
Gonorrhoea can also lead to skin problems and problems in the joints.
Antibiotics are used to treat gonorrhoea.
