HIV and AIDS

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has increased over the past decade with an estimated 50,000 people now having this virus in the UK.

HIV is an infection that affects the immune system of the body, which means the body cannot defend itself well against disease and infections. An HIV test confirms whether or not the virus is present in the body, by checking antibodies in your body to fight against HIV. Tests are available in NHS sexual health clinics.

HIV can be spread through unprotected vaginal or anal sex, sharing of needles or other drug injecting equipment, and through infected blood. A mother with HIV can pass this infection to her baby during pregnancy, during birth or through breastfeeding.

Using condoms correctly and at all times can prevent HIV from spreading.

There is no treatment for HIV, but new drugs may control the virus. This means the person with HIV will always live with this virus.
