Syphillis
A very few people catch syphilis now, but recently there has been an increase.
The first symptoms of syphilis are a lump or lesion on or around the vagina, penis, testicles and the anus. The lump/lesion can take up to 12 weeks to develop, and the person may then feel ill, as if suffering from a fever, with a headache and tiredness. White patches on the tongue or roof of the mouth may appear.
Some people with syphilis will need no treatment to clear the infection as the infection slowly disappears itself, but it is important to make sure the syphilis is treated. Syphilis can cause damage to organs, bones and the nervous system.
If the syphilis is caught early, antibiotics can be used to treat the infection.
